Update: The new Pope is Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the archbishop of Buenos Aires, Argentina. He has taken the name Francis after Saint Francis of Assisi.

He is the first Latin American Pope. Like Leonardo Sandri, he has Italian parents. Unlike Sandri, he has spent most of his life in Argentina.

On February 11, 2013, Pope Benedict XVI announced that he was resigning, shocking the world.

Nevertheless, Benedict XVI stepped down on February 28, 2013. Which leaves the question…

Who’s the new Pope?

We may not know the answer to that question for a while, but this is how the Pope is chosen.
